PDF to Markdown Converter
MarkdFlow turns PDF files into clean, structured Markdown — not a wall of extracted text. Headings stay headings, tables stay tables, formulas survive the trip, and every block carries a confidence score so you know where to double-check. Built for people who feed documents into LLMs, RAG pipelines and knowledge bases.

Why convert PDF to Markdown at all?
A PDF is a layout format, not a data format. Extracting raw text out of one gives you broken line wraps, orphaned page numbers, and tables flattened into unreadable whitespace. Markdown keeps the semantic structure that downstream tools can actually use.
- LLMs read it better — heading hierarchy tells the model what is a section, a subsection, and a caption.
- RAG chunking works properly — you can split on headings instead of slicing mid-sentence.
- Tables survive — a Markdown table stays a table, so an LLM can answer questions about the numbers.
- It diffs and versions — Markdown is plain text, so it drops into git, review flows and CI like any other file.
- It is portable — one output format that works in Obsidian, Notion, Docusaurus, Confluence, or a vector store.
How to convert a PDF to Markdown
- 1Create a free account — email or Google sign-in. You get 30 free credits after email verification, no card required.
- 2Drop your PDF into the converter (up to 10 MB on the free tier, 50 MB when subscribed). Scanned PDFs are handled by OCR, not just text extraction.
- 3Copy or download the Markdown. Open the block inspector to see per-block confidence, reading order and block counts, then paste straight into your pipeline.
Batch and automation: Need to process a folder instead of one file? Use the conversion API and loop over your documents. One credit is consumed per processed page.
Supported input formats
| Category | Formats |
|---|---|
| Documents | PDF, DOC/DOCX, PPT/PPTX, XLS/XLSX, ODT, RTF |
| Images | JPG, JPEG, PNG, AVIF, TIFF, GIF, HEIC, BMP, WEBP |
| Ebooks | EPUB, FB2 |
| Notebooks & data | IPYNB, CSV, XML, JSON, BIB, OPML |
| Text & markup | TXT, MD, TEX, source files |
Scanned pages and screenshots go through OCR, so image-only PDFs produce real text instead of an empty page.
What makes the output usable
| Element | What MarkdFlow does |
|---|---|
| Headings | Real Markdown heading levels (#, ##, ###) derived from document structure, not font size guessing |
| Tables | Preserved as Markdown tables with cell and header alignment intact |
| Formulas | Kept as LaTeX so KaTeX and MathJax render them correctly |
| Reading order | Multi-column layouts and figure captions are re-ordered into a sensible reading sequence |
| Confidence | Every block carries a confidence score; low-confidence blocks are flagged for review |
| Language | Detected language is reported so you can route documents to the right pipeline |

Frequently asked questions
Is the PDF to Markdown converter free?
Yes, to start: sign up, verify your email, and you get 30 free credits — that is roughly 30 pages. No credit card is needed for the free tier.
Does it work with scanned PDFs?
Yes. Scanned pages and screenshots are processed with OCR, so you get real text rather than an empty result.
Are tables and formulas preserved?
Tables are emitted as Markdown tables and formulas are kept in LaTeX. Both are visible in the output preview before you download anything.
How large can my file be?
10 MB on the free tier, 20 MB on trial and 50 MB on Pro or Annual.
Can I convert many files at once?
Yes, through the conversion API. The web app handles one document at a time; the API is the path for folders and automated jobs.
Do you support languages other than English?
Yes. The interface supports English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese and Korean, and the OCR engine handles multilingual documents. The detected language is reported with each conversion.
